After an overnight stay in the city of Venice and the Renaissance treasures of Urbino, explore the Roman history of Split, where the Palace of Diocletian occupies half the city, before walking the walls of Dubrovnik and discovering ancient Lecce, a city of treasures including an ancient Roman amphitheatre.

Butrint in Albania is another rich repository of the past, as is the Graeco-Roman theatre of Taormina. Then cruise through the Strait of Messina to Salerno on the Amalfi Coast to arrive at the most famous archaeological sites in history, Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum.

In Rome, tour the Colosseum and St Peter in Chains, then sail to Florence for some remarkable galleries, building and museums, before visiting the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa and the 25,000-seat Roman amphitheatre of Lucca.

Elba is the island of Napoleon’s exile, then cruise past the Lavezzi Isles and Maddalena Archipelago to Corsica, Menorca, Mallorca, Gibraltar and the historic port of Malaga.

Finally, enter the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and sail upstream through the Andalusian countryside to the heart of Seville, on a spectacular finale that is small-ship cruising at its best.
